The presence of invasive animals is a constant and significant threat to fauna in Western Australia and a primary cause of the decline and extinction of numerous species. Considering the vast size of Western Australia and the economic impact of management, managing these species presents numerous challenges.

The impact of invasive animals can extend over vast areas, spanning multiple local and state boundaries. DBCA collaborates with others such as the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development, recognised biosecurity groups, catchment councils, declared species groups and recreational hunting groups to control these species effectively.

By receiving support from recreational hunting groups, DBCA can maximise efforts to enhance biodiversity outcomes at a landscape level.  Groups may assist through:

  • the provision of complementary support or parallel efforts for current or planned strategic pest animal control
  • where the department does not have the capacity or resources to undertake such control
  • where a group can adopt a defined land area to remove pest animals to assist with effective biodiversity outcomes

Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) are in place with a number of recreational hunting groups in Western Australia. The MoUs ensure the highest level of integrity is upheld and maintained.

DBCA will involve recognised recreational hunting groups in pest animal control where the involvement is safe and cost-effective and will lead to improved biodiversity outcomes. DBCA will negotiate a works agreement and issue land access permits when the opportunity arises. The agreement will outline specific objectives, operational requirements, and the time and location of pest animal control work to be included in the approved program. Individuals are only eligible to participate if they are members of a formally recognised MoU recreational hunting group.

If you want to support pest control in your area, contact DBCA’s Invasive Animals Program Coordinator to learn more.
