Draft open for public comment
The Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA) is responsible for the conservation of whale sharks and managing interactions with these gentle giants within State waters. DBCA works with the public, stakeholders and partners to protect whale sharks in WA and manage the world-class whale shark tourism industry at Ningaloo Marine Park. Commercial tourism operators are partners of DBCA, helping to conserve the species and educate visitors to Ningaloo.
The whale shark management program supports conservation of the species and best practice management of whale shark interactions. DBCA has undertaken a review of the 2013 management program and prepared a new draft management program, which is now available for public comment. The revised management program provides for positive conservation outcomes and a sustainable tourism industry.
DBCA also works closely with Traditional Owners to ensure a culturally appropriate approach to the revised program. Key stakeholders from the tourism, conservation and scientific sectors were invited to contribute to the review via interviews and stakeholder questionnaires. All input received from stakeholders has been considered in the revised management program.
Please take this opportunity to have your say and contribute to the management of whale sharks in Western Australia.
