DBCA is an agency with diverse roles and responsibilities. It employs about 1650 people.

These include permanent staffers, contract employees, casual and seasonal workers, and trainees. They work in cities and towns, as well as in some of the most remote areas of the State. Approximately three-quarters of the workforce is employed in country areas.

DBCA operates from offices in Perth, nine regional and nearly 20 district centres, as well as from other locations. Staff work in the field, offices and laboratories, and on a range of programs and projects dealing with parks, fire protection, plants, animals and people.

Registering with the WA Government Jobs Board

Employment opportunities with the Government of Western Australia are listed on the WA Government Jobs Board. When you register with this site an email will be forwarded to you automatically whenever a position of potential interest to you is advertised.

How to register on the WA Government Jobs Board

  1. Go to the WA Government Jobs Board at jobs.wa.gov.au.
  2. Select Search for Job Vacancies on the WA Government Jobs Board.
  3. Select Email Me Job' from left menu.
  4. Register by accepting the conditions.
  5. Complete the New Account Details and Save (a password will be sent to your email address - this may take a few minutes).
  6. Select Login from the left menu, and complete your email address and password details.
  7. Select Profile under My Jobs.
  8. Select Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions from the Agency search box (and select options from other search boxes such as OccupationSalary Range to further define positions of potential interest to you), and Save.

Work experience

The department receives many requests from people wishing to work with the department in a voluntary or work experience capacity.

Work experience programs for individuals may be limited to one or two weeks depending on availability and demand.

Educational work experience programs

Most, but not all secondary schools operate a work experience program run by the Department of Education. This program is funded, administered and evaluated by the schools and all students are insured for workers compensation by the Department of Education. Work experience in some operational areas of the department may be arranged as follows:

National parks

Working with a park ranger in one of Western Australia's national parks.

  • Perth metropolitan area – the closest national parks are Yanchep and John Forrest. Contact the ranger in charge.
  • Outside metropolitan area – a list of postal addresses for all national parks can be obtained by contacting DBCA general enquiries.

Wildlife protection and animal care

Work experience is not offered in this area of work. Wildlife protection and investigation work is often confidential and/or risky. No work experience is available in animal care.

State forests

If you are interested in working with a forest ranger, in a forest district responsible for the management and control of State forests or plantations, or with any Forest District Manager, see the DBCA office locations page for addresses and contact telephone numbers.

Science and Conservation  

Work experience may be offered within Science and Conservation, although places are limited. The department has research centres or laboratories at Kensington (including the WA Herbarium), Woodvale, Dwellingup, Manjimup and Busselton. Applicants can contact their nearest centre for information.

Temporary Employment Register

Occasionally, DBCA has non-ongoing employment opportunities available across a range of positions, which need to be filled at short notice.

Depending on our business needs, we may need full time, part time or casual staff for period up to twelve (12) months.

Positions may be available in a range of areas including administration, finance, customer service, media, project management, human resources, information technology, science, fire operations, conservation and environmental management. The register is actively monitored for various opportunities in these areas.
