The three reserves within this plan, Montebello Islands Marine Park (58,331 ha), Barrow Island Marine Park (4,169 ha) and Barrow Island Marine Management Area (114,693 ha) are located off the north-west coast of Western Australia, approximately 1,600 km north of Perth.

Amongst the lagoons and channels is a variety of habitats such as coral reefs, seagrass and mangrove communities, rocky shores and reef platforms, with several species of marine turtles, seabirds, migrating Humpback whales and dugongs occuring in the warm waters of the reserves.
