The reserve is situated on the Swan Coastal Plain in the Swan Coastal Plain bioregion. It is internationally important as a habitat and refuge for water birds, and in 1990, Thomsons Lake, together with Forrestdale Lake, was designated to the List of Wetlands of International Importance under the Convention on Wetlands (Ramsar, Iran, 1971).
