Background

Purnululu National Park, located in the Kimberley region of Western Australia, covers almost 240,000 hectares of remote area managed as wilderness.

It is located 300 kilometers south of the small regional town of Kununurra. It includes the Bungle Bungle Range, a spectacularly incised landscape of sculptured rocks which contains superlative examples of beehive-shaped karst sandstone rising 250 metres above the surrounding semi-arid savannah grasslands.

Unique depositional processes and weathering have given these towers their spectacular black and orange banded appearance, formed by biological processes of cyanobacteria (single cell photosynthetic organisms) which serve to stabilise and protect the ancient sandstone formations.

These outstanding examples of cone karst that have eroded over a period of 20 million years are of great beauty and exceptional geological interest.

The site was inscribed on the World Heritage list in 2003 for its outstanding natural value under Criterion vii and viii. Whilst Purnululu National Park is not currently listed for its cultural values, the site remains an incredibly significant place for the Traditional Owners of the Gija, Jaru and Malngin language groups. Native Title was determined over the park in December 2022.

About the committee

The Purnululu World Heritage Area Advisory Committee serves as an advisory body to the Minister for the Environment, the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA) and the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW).

Its role is to provide informed advice on the identification, protection, conservation, and presentation of the Outstanding Universal Values of the World Heritage Property.

It is expected that members will prioritise in person attendance at meetings. Members may be required to provide advice out of session however shall not be remunerated for any work outside of attendance to meetings.
