The Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA) has released the Perth Water Buneenboro Locality Plan, providing a guide to future improvements and management of the precinct, its foreshores and surrounds.

Perth water, Buneenboro, is a diverse and interconnected living system situated between the Narrows Bridge in the west and Windan Bridge in the east.

The precinct is transforming, with major projects underway, increasing visitor numbers and new water and land-based activities.

DBCA Rivers and Estuaries manager Glen McLeod-Thorpe said the locality plan will ensure any future developments of the area are well managed.

“This is about ensuring we manage the balance between the river’s unique environment, health and cultural heritage values, while also accommodating tourism, recreation and economic development potential,” he said.

“It will also aid in creating a vibrant waterfront where people can engage and enjoy the river for many years to come.”

This new plan focuses on respecting the cultural and environmental value of the area and addresses key development considerations such as tourism and recreation opportunities, commercial use and transport improvements around and across the river.

The plan was developed by the Department, with the support of the Swan River Trust and in cooperation with the Cities of Perth and South Perth and the Town of Victoria Park; the Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage; the Department of Transport; Development WA; and Tourism Western Australia.

The plan, which can be accessed here, was subject to extensive consultation and engagement with key stakeholders, user groups, the Whadjuk community and the broader community of Perth.
